It appears that the Internal Revenue Service is nearing its final phase of disbursing the last remaining coronavirus stimulus checks under President Joe Biden’s ambitious American Rescue Plan.

But there is still a slew of reports that suggest that many cash-starved Americans are left on the sidelines, struggling daily to find ways to make ends meet. Considering that many millions of stimulus payments were rapidly sent out, only a small percentage of that could potentially mean that tens of thousands of individuals have yet to receive their checks.

For those mired in this unfortunate situation, know that they can still try to claim the money that they’re entitled to.

Fortunately, the IRS has a set of procedures that can help people in that quest.

For this particular tax season—which has been extended to May 17—a Recovery Rebate Credit has been added to all tax returns in order to help people get their hands on the overdue payments.

“If you didn’t get any payments or got less than the full amounts, you may qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return to claim the credit even if you don’t normally file,” states the IRS website.

Furthermore, some taxpayers reportedly have gotten a confirmation letter (Notice 1444 or Notice 1444-B) from the IRS stating that their payment was issued even though they have yet to receive it.

In this situation, the affected individuals have the option to request an IRS payment trace.

Understand that the same will hold true if the IRS “Get My Payment” tool at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment shows that the stimulus funds have been transferred but the balance has not changed at all in the recipient’s bank account.

Be aware, though, that some people will receive a message that says, “Payment Status Not Available.”

“If you get this message, either we have not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment,” the IRS says. “We will continue to send the 2021 Economic Impact Payment to eligible individuals throughout 2021.”

Another handy under-the-radar option is to track USPS mail deliveries. People can just sign up for “Informed Delivery” here, which enables them on a daily basis to digitally preview and manage USPS mail deliveries, such as stimulus checks and debit cards—and best of all, it is totally free.

“Informed Delivery provides eligible residential consumers with a digital preview of their household’s incoming mail scheduled to arrive soon,” the USPS website says.

“Users can view greyscale images of the exterior, address side of incoming letter-sized mailpieces (not the inside contents) via email or an online dashboard,” it adds.
