Shortly after the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol voted unanimously on Thursday to subpoena Donald Trump, the former president mocked the committee on his social media website but did not say how he would respond to the subpoena, NBC News reported.

“Why didn’t the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago?” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country,” he continued.

In a series of tweets after the committee’s vote, Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich did not say how Trump would respond to the subpoena.

“Today, 26 days before the Midterm Elections, America is truly a nation in decline. Inflation is out of control, the crime rate is at an all time high, and the crisis at our southern border has never been worse,” he wrote.

“However, instead of using their final days in power to make life for Americans any better, Democrats are doubling and tripling down on their partisan theatrics. Democrats have no solutions and they have no interest in leading our great nation. They are simply bitter, power hungry & desperate. Pres Trump will not be intimidated by their meritless rhetoric or un-American actions. Trump-endorsed candidates will sweep the Midterms, and America First leadership & solutions will be restored. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

The committee’s resolution to subpoena Trump passed with the support of all of its members, nine votes to zero. The panel’s vice chair introduced it, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who has long called the former president the Capitol attack’s “central player.”

“None of this would have happened without him. He was personally and substantially involved in all of it,” Cheney said.

She added that the committee “may ultimately decide to make a series of criminal referrals to the Department of Justice.” However, she said lawmakers “recognize that our role is not to make decisions regarding prosecution.”

Meanwhile, the panel's chair, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), contended that Trump needs to “answer for his actions.”

“This is a question about accountability to the American people,” he said. “He must be accountable. He is required to answer for his actions. He’s required to answer to those police officers who put their lives and bodies on the line to defend our democracy. He’s required to answer to those millions of Americans whose votes he wanted to throw out as part of his scheme to remain in power.”
