Job Opening: Assistant Editor
The National Interest is seeking a detail-oriented, creative, results-driven individual to serve as an assistant editor.
This fast-paced position requires working closely with the editor. Pluses are:
• experience with the Chicago Manual of Style
• InDesign and Photoshop proficiency
• experience with web design and Drupal
• familiarity with TNI’s work and the national-security issues that the magazine covers—particularly the Asia-Pacific, Russia, NATO, defense technology and spending, and counterterrorism
• a relevant undergraduate degree (required) and a relevant graduate degree (preferred)
Responsibilities:
• Editing for style and substance (must make a five-thousand-word essay on, say, U.S. grand strategy accessible without jettisoning nuance and rigor)
• Fact-checking
• Design (InDesign and Photoshop)
• Packaging (headlines and art)
• Managing relationships with contributors, many of whom are leaders in their field
• Commissioning
Web
• Copyediting (under the auspices of Chicago, TNI house style and common sense)
• Fact-checking
• Packaging (headlines and art)
• Social-media management
• Writing! (TNI editors have a unique opportunity to write for a worldwide audience of millions)
